About

Welcome to my blog, a foray into the land of writing and self-delusion.

What you’ll find here

All my work is inspired by things that happen to me, things that I see or observe, or something someone has said to me, a look, a smile, even a glance. The content on this blog is personal and a reflection of who I am. For the longest time I kept my artistic pursuits and thoughts to myself, afraid to be open to the judgement of others, and my own in relation to those. I started this blog because I wanted to get out of that constrained mindset, and truly immerse myself in what I am most passionate about, which is being creative. Literature, writing and art are core parts of my identity, they always have been, for the longest time I can remember. They got sidelined however whilst growing up in favour of academic achievement, but now I have made it a priority to focus on what I love doing in order to reconnect with myself. The internet, social media especially, has also made it incredibly easy and exciting to connect with others through these mediums too.

WRITING LIFE

This covers all my creative writing attempts, from small snippets/extracts of books I’ll probs never write to poetry and tips on writing and inspiration. When I initially started this blog, it was to become more comfortable with my writing/voice on *paper*. I want to write and publish a novel, several novels in fact, but I need to pop out one at least first! I was hoping that if I had a blog it would keep me motivated to keep writing and share my work in the hope that people didn’t think it was absolutely crap.

Something as personal as writing and sharing it with others used to inject me with some unknown fear, but I honestly no longer suffer from this (or not to such a great extent now at least), and that’s been mostly to do with the fact that I just give less of a shit about everything.

Recently I have found myself writing small bits of poetry or rhyme, at all hours of the day and night. It sort of just plops into my head when I am least expecting it and then I scramble to write it all down in the Notes app on my iPhone before I forget. Words, when they take hold of me when I least expect them to, appear to have created some of the writing pieces that I am most proud of.

I hope you enjoy reading the variety of stuff I have managed to write over the years in this section.

READING & REVIEWS

Here lie my reviews of books and movies or anything else cultural. I am an avid reader; I have been since I was a wee bairn, and the benefits of being a book blogger are pretty good (free books ahoyyy!). I tend to pop out a movie review here and then, when a movie has made some sort of impact on me. This is a rather rare occurrence as I do not appear to have the attention span to watch a movie in one sitting these days lol.

When I was younger I used to be able to read a book a day, but that has declined at a tragic rate in adulthood, so I am making an effort to read more, and blog about it is as it’s a fun experience for me and I have opinions. If I have taken the time out to read something and it’s utterly rubbish, then I will say so. On the other hand, if it has granted me unmeasurable joy, then I would want others to know about it and share in the same delight.

I pretty much love reading everything, although late 19th century/early 20th century literature has a special place in my heart (weird I know, don’t ask, but I just love the whole industrialisation thing going on, and social mobility was like an actual thing back then). I also love stuff which is controversial so if there’s anything pushing people’s buttons, please do send it my way. If you would like me to review something, please feel free to get in touch via the form below. I take the time to consider each request before accepting or declining. All my posts are shared across my social media platforms.

I review all books honestly and personally.

Rating Scale

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Amazing, couldn’t put it down, changed my life, moved me in a way I didn’t know I could be moved. Loins on fire.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Was pretty smashing and didn’t emotionally destroy me.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Good enough. I suppose. (Joke – this is a pretty good rating from me as I have high standards. Most books I read tend to be 3 or 4.)

⭐ ⭐ Why???

⭐ How did this rubbish even get published.

Minus star ratings will be given for stuff deserving of it for existing as a detriment to life and literature. ‘The Girl on the Train’ comes to mind here.

ART & LYRICS

This is a project I started working on at the start of 2017. Well it actually popped into my head whilst I was procrastinating during my CIM exams back in October 2016, but I could only let it fully take shape after I had got that nightmare out of the way. I originally started it on my Instagram as the post format suits the content of my work really well (square formatted art piece with a short lyrical rhyme/poem to go with the image), but wanted to share it on here, as I mentioned this project as one of my New Year’s goals. All my work is original – drawing, painting, editing, and writing.

The project combines my love for art and rhyme, and reflects my desire to express myself and my experiences through those mediums. This is probably some of the most personal stuff I’ve ever created and shared. Usually I just keep them to myself, or destroy them after I’ve worked on them. My art and what I write here are truly inspired by my surroundings, the people that I have encountered in my life and the impact they have had on me, whether they know it or not. If you look closely enough, you might just see yourself in them.

MUSINGS

This section is exactly as it says – the posts here are my random musings on life, food, music, events – anything that interests me really! It’s a whole assortment of stuff that I just felt like writing about at the time. Some #dietlife tips to opinion pieces to nostalgia and reflection. Enjoy!
